Davis’ Waste Assessment
Step 1 -- Weigh All the TrashUsing a simple bathroom scale, all the trash produced in one 24-hour period was weighed with the students’ help.
Total trash produced in one day: 271 lbs.97 lbs. of classroom trash174 lbs. of lunch/kitchen trash
The Results:Davis learned that 64% of their classroom trash is actually recyclable -- that’s equal to 310 pounds a week!

The Waste Assessment will be performed again at the end of the school year to track improvements. Hopefully there sill be much less recyclable material in the trash by then!
Step 2 -- Sort it!
Using gloves, the students sorted a bag of classroom trash into two different categories:

recyclables - paper, cardboard, cans, bottles, etc.
non-recyclables - plastic bags, paper towels, laminated paper, etc.
