California’s Waste Assessment
Step 1 -- Weigh All the TrashUsing a simple bathroom scale, all the trash produced in one 24-hour period was weighed with the students’ help.
Total trash produced in one day: 253 lbs.63 lbs. of classroom trash190 lbs. of lunch/breakfast trash
Step 2 -- Sort it!
Using gloves, the students sorted a bag of classroom trash into two different categories:
·
recyclables - paper, cardboard, cans, bottles, etc.
non-recyclables - plastic bags, paper towels, laminated paper, etc.
The Results:California learned that 58% of their classroom trash is actually recyclable -- that’s equal to 190 pounds a week!

The Waste Assessment will be performed again at the end of the school year to track improvements. Hopefully there will be much less recyclable material in the trash by then!
