California began the year by performing a Waste Assessment to figure out how much trash -- and how much recyclable material -- is thrown away each day. See what they found out.

In the first year of the grant program, California will:

Begin recycling classroom/office paper and plastic bottles.
Promote a “One or None” paper towel policy throughout the school
Begin a cloth lunchbag campaign
The student members of Student Council will also:
Introduce the recycling program at Flag Deck
Hold an assembly on the importance of recycling
Start a school-wide recycling contest with trophies made from recycled materials for each semester’s winner
